Nice! Now maybe map out some parameters as to what conditions would prevent you from biking to work (temp, precipitation, sickness, injury, oversleeping, extra cargo, scheduling conflicts, etc.), and figure out how often those are likely to prevent you from biking to work? Obviously, climate data are readily available; the other stuff will be a hipshot at best, but you can probably get a ballpark idea of the actual financial impact of biking. Don't forget to include savings on gas, car maintenance, doctor bills, and so on.

That doesn't look like the safest way to ride, but I'm not one to judge. Riding to school that way is going to be a great memory for her one day. Good work, dad.

That looks perfect for an in-town bike. It's a shame about the bad routes; there's just not anything you can do to overcome that, except to acquire a death wish, or to do stupid stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2-oXSd2Id0&t=1m48s
Well, maybe you can do better than that.

The route is not at all bike-friendly. My driving route is mostly highway. I could do it on streets, but they'd be busy streets with no bike lanes. My neighborhood is starting to get bike lanes on some busier streets, which is nice, but I'm still not really comfortable riding at night. I always assume that every car driver is drunk and fiddling with the radio, and it makes me super-paranoid.

On the other hand, I can ride about ten miles on a recently opened "greenline" to the Humane Society for Saturday dog-walking. I may give that a try, but a ten-mile ride there, plus three to four hours of dogwalking, plus ten miles back might turn out to be a bit much. But what the heck? Might as well give it a try.

13 miles is a little far to pull every day, unless you are REALLY into it. That would be worth getting a nice fast bike if it was a regular thing. How is the route? In Atlanta, there's almost no 13 mile route that you could make that would be a safe ride.

Heck yes, blog it! My sister and I started an exercise support group with a password-protected blog back in July, where we post our results and triumphs and failures, as well as embarrassing before and after photos. Blogging it is a HUGE motivation aid. She's lost over 30 pounds since we started.

Another suggestion: I don't know if such is available for Blackberry, but there are free apps for Android and iPhone that let you record your path via GPS and will tell you how far you've gone, average speed, etc. For example, here's a bike ride I took a few months ago around my local park: Map link.

Nerd Fitness is a decent resource too. While I harbor massive distrust for the "Paleo diet" that the author recommends, you have to admit that whatever he's doing is getting results.
